Samuel Out Three Weeks

STRAIN FOR SAMUEL, WILL RETURN IN THREE WEEKS

"If a warrior like Samuel asked to come out then it must be very serious.  It would be a huge loss."  That was Andrea Stramaccioni after Inter-Siena and his fear has come true.  The examinations which he underwent yesterday have revealed that the 34 year-old central defender has suffered a strained adductor of the right leg.  The Argentinian will be out three weeks and will miss the game against Udinese (also suspended), Fiorentina and Cesena.  He could return to play versus Parma on May 2 or the derby on the 6th.

More Chivu than Rano On Wednesday, Stramaccioni replaced Samuel with Nagatomo and moved Chivu alongside Lucio.  It is very possible that this would be the choice on Saturday.  Also because that the Bianconeri have a very speedy players up front in Di Natale and Barretto and so the duo of Lucio-Ranocchia could be a risk.

Obi decisive If Stankovic left the field exhausted against Siena and Cambiasso will seal his third game in eight days, in the midfield what remains is one position.  Obi, again, seems to be the favorite over Guarin and Poli.  Recall that he was taken out of the game due to cramps.  But the 20 year-old could be the surprise weapon for a less offensive trident with Milito and Zarate.  The most likely solution remains one of Alvarez or Forlan.

Sneijder perhaps in Florence In all of this, the team is still waiting for, other than Maicon, the return of Sneijder.  Yesterday, the Dutchman played for the first time in a practice match after awhile.  He could return against Fiorentina.  Then it is up to Stramaccioni to find ways to re-integrate him into the lineup.

Peter what I meant by conservative is that he just like many others rather stick with the old guns than taking risks and choose younger guys ahead of them. Everybody knows Rano has made mistakes and can still do, but Chivu is not any reliable defender either. So what's the point of starting him ahead of Rano exactly? Rano needs to develop his game in order to get better and make lesser and lesser mistakes. He's not going to achieve that by being stuck to the bench. Same goes to other young lads in the team. Stankovic being a natural leader?! Not sure about that title when that natural leader, as the focal point of the team, is invisible most of time, slow and misplace tons of passes. I see no solid reason in starting the likes of Stankovic and Chivu ahead of Rano, Poli and Guarin.

Stankovic again. No Poli, no Guarin, Chivu ahead of Ranocchia. Stramaccioni seems to have the strong conservative roots of Italian heritage in him as well.

I don't think that playing Stankovic is indicative of "conservative roots." He fills a niche in the side that no one else can play. Sure, he isn't the best defensively, but he's by far the best deep-lying distributor now that TM is gone. He's also a natural leader. I can't say he should be gone come June and replaced by a younger player (maybe Guarin groomed into that role?), but at the moment he's the best we've got to fill that role.

Other than the Chivu-Nagatomo battle, I don't see anything else that's disappointing in his team selection. To his credit, Chivu is much more disciplined defensively than Nagatomo, which works to give balance to the team.

As soon as Alvarez was semi-healthy, he put him right into the starting line-up. Guarin isn't fit enough to play twice a week yet either. Poli will get there eventually, and Cambiasso is a much more disciplined option on the right side of midfield.

The only possible explanation for his lineups is that he wants to dig us out with the old guys and then bring up the youngsters. Pretty dissapointing, so far.
