Leonardo Press Conference Live

Posted on December 29, 2010 at 6:52 AM

Wow, I can't believe that I actually stayed up (as I'm starting this post, it's 3:54 am) for a presentation of a new coach.  I didn't when we got Mourinho.  But here is the full press conference.

"I see well-known faces here.  I will now live in a fascinating situation.  I have been in Milan for 13 years and I am excited because it is a day of great feelings.  A year ago, I was looking for a dream.  A dream that would stimulate me, a great challenge.  And it doesn't get any bigger than this."

On a scale of one to ten in terms of emotion, the desire and maybe a little bit of fear...

"Football gives you opportunities.  You live everything in one day, one match where emotions are immense.  Today I live in infinite array of emotions, this challenge is so great that it is impossible to say no.  There is also a spontaneous and wonderful relationship with the president.  Now we are here, everything seemed unlikely but many things have brought me here today.  It is a very special day, there is a relationship of respect but now I am the coach and he is the president, he has my total respect."

And you saw your way out of Milan and ended here at Inter...

"I will be very frank.  I have always tried to be free.  I want my identify.  Then if I create a relationship with a team, and I will always be myself in that situation.  I have many things in common with Milan and I wil never forget what I experienced and I want to thank Milan, there I was a player, a director and a coach and not for one second i will forget.  Because with Capello and Milan I arrived there.  Fabio wanted me in Italy then Galliani whom I respect a lot.  But there are differences everywhere, but there are also common things here at Inter.  I try to make it very clear.  I have my truth of this situation.  I have no regrets and I do not feel guilty.  I have always been free, as I have always said that I want to stay in reality and people know it, nobody can tell me anything.  I could not say no to a challenge that is so beautiful and unexpected."

What will be the first thing that you ask the team?

"I feel very full and enthusiastic about that I found.  The victories will create complicity and enthusiasm which I feel at Inter.  There is nothing particular to request.  Inter have won everything and have its own identity.  I don't have to invent anything.  The players know what to do as I will simply put them in the best condition to win.  I don't think about satisfaction because my Inter must have the serenity of someone who has won and is great.  We must get back to do great things like this great part of last year."

What bothers you now that you are presented as a traitor?

"I don't want to be a nice guy as they say.  I respect all judgments as I always want my freedom of opinion.  Each person can see in his own way of this move, but I have mine own and football is emotional."

Tell us the differences and similarities between the first day at Milan and now today at Inter.   On the organization, technical point of view...

"Comparisons are always difficult.  In a year, things can be different even on the same team.  What I experienced at Milan is different from that of today.  I arrived here after 12 yeas in management.  At Inter it is very different.  I have to learn many things because I have only came to Pinetina three times even though I know many people here.  Coming after 13 years at Milan, the situation is very strong but I feel privileged to live in this situation."

There are already Nerazzurri shirts with Kaka on them.  Fans are dreaming of the Brazilian.

"Knowing Kaka, I think that he will never leave Real Madrid.  I hear him from often and he has great desire to remain there.  He wants to do well at Real."

How long did you take to accept Inter?

"Very little.  The desire has grown over time.  I never really thought that anything could happen."

Do you believe in returning for the Scudetto?
"Yes, indeed.  The season is very long.  The situation is unusual because we have 13 less points but with two games in hand.  The start will be crucial."

After 13 years at Milan, now you are their opponent of every day.  How will you live this?
"Because they are the leaders of course.  We are strengthened and they are one of the favorites.  But now there is also us.  What we need to do now is to get back into the group of favorites for the tittle.  The Club World Cup has given us a great charge."

What players have you heard these days?

"Everyone, not just players.  We have no time and on January 6 we are already on the field.  I wanted to know everyone.  I met them at Appiano Gentile to breath the air of a place that will produce our plays.  I found a great reception from all.  I did not know what to expect so thank you.  It was very positive."

What will concern you the most for the future?
"Now I have to observe and learn then I can think and act.  I will not revolutionize anything, just add my basic ideas that I will try to transmit.  I have seen at first sand so much in two days, a lot of positive to maintain and very little negative to be deleted.  I want to know who they really are, not only as a coach but as a manager of the team.  Then the relationships will be established."

Who do you think you can compare yourself to at Inter?

"Are you talking about Mourinho? (Smiles)  Mourinho, to me, was extraordinary.  I called him and coming to Inter without passing him is impossible.  Mourinho is everywhere.  I knew him and he was wonderful.  We talked about many things.  He gave me his opinion not because he is the great Jose Mourinho but he is a very intelligent man who is still here and left everything.  I am very happy with everything that he has given me.  I consider him a champion, behind his brilliant press conferences is the endless work which he dedicated his life to that.  His work can still be seen here."

Not a bit confused to come here at Inter?
"I am not Jose Mourinho.  I had one year as a coach with a thousand mistakes and perhaps a bit positive.  Today I will start my second adventure."

In these months without work, a coaching job teases you again?
"Good question.  When I was at Milan once I thought about my future.  i was not sure if I wanted to continue.  But I believe that this opportunity gave me the confidence that i want to do.  Inter convinced me of what I want."

The other day Oddo approved your choice but Pato said "I hope he doesn't win much."

"It was not a dig by Alexandre.  Had he hoped me win everything would not be normal.  It was just a joke."

What would you bring to your Inter?

"I have never lived as an enemy of Inter and I am not saying that is why I am here.  Milan is a city of culture.  The rivalry here is more or less quite moments but in 100 years of history there is always respect.  I lived at Milan 100% with the greatest fidelity, without thinking about the rival Inter.  As regards to what I will give Inter, there are many things that I agree with last year and a half.  Then there are features such as physical strength and concentration, with a specific game and a very solid defense.  This is not far from what I see, but I almost fully agree to the base of all."

What do you think about the injuries during Benitez's era?
"I don't think there is a magician that could do that.  The team has great resources, the urge and desire which are trademark of Inter.  We can only find the best way to put the guys in normal conditions from training to small things.  I don't believe in satisfaction.  I can not believe that a winning team is no longer quiet.  This Inter decided to redeem itself by winning the World Cup so there is nothing to prove by this team.  You must think about the good work done here and condition on this plan.  Looking at Inter now, I see it on top of everything."

What can you tell us about transfer market?
"There is nothing to say.  I don't care about the transfer market for now."
